====== Editing Captions in VL-Images ====== === Captions === After the import of images to the VL-Images database, it is required to enter the captions from the related source into the appropriate database field named //original caption (short)// (layout: //new/edit//). For captions in other languages than English please give a translation in modern English in the //web caption (english, short)// field. The text in this fields **must not be longer than about 250-300 characters**, the actual length is shown on top of the input field. Note: images will only show up on the web site if at least one of these two fields is filled in. === Long Captions === In case captions exceed the 300 characters limit, they must be shortened properly. Indicate shortenings with square brackets: [...]. Change to the //captions// layout to find additional fields for various versions of the captions: * //original caption (short)// is the same field as in the //new/edit// layout * //web caption (english, short)// is also the same as in the //new/edit// layout and holds a shortened (if necessary) english translation in modern English * //original caption (full text)// takes the complete unabridged caption from the source if this exeeds the limit of 300 characters. You can easily copy this from the short version field by using the //copy 'caption'// button. * //long web caption / description, english// is intended for the English translation of the full text caption. === No Caption given === In case **no caption** is given, a meaningful description extracted from the article should be entered **in square brackets**; if there is no description available the title of the related article, perhaps with a short keyword added, can be used as long as it is closely related to the content of the image. When working with images of experimental set-ups and **no legend** of labelled items used in a set-up is given, it should be compiled from the full text like this: * e.g.: [A: Condensationsgefäss, F: Absorptionskölbchen] etc.
